Frequently Asked Questions

Most Body Piercings

Our general age guideline is 14 years old and up for anything beyond ear lobe piercings.  However, we do make some exceptions based on a consultation with the client and their guardian.

Ear Lobe Piercings

We require verbal consent from all of our clients.  We get lots of requests for infant earlobe piercings, and while we appreciate that parents are beginning to be aware of the safety issues from establishments that rely on piercing guns, we do suggest waiting until they are old enough to be aware and give consent.  If you do insist on getting them done please check with your pediatrician, as many will perform the piercings for your little one. It is our belief that our clients, no matter their age, have the final say in whether they get a piercing.  So please be aware we will not force or coerce your child into doing something they don’t want to do, and ask you to behave the same way.

Genital and Nipple Piercings

Client must be 18 years or older.  There are no exceptions to this rule.

Modern Ritual is approved by The City of Canton’s health department to operate a body art facility at 326 Cleveland Ave NW Canton, OH 44702.

Currently there is no individual licensing in The State of Ohio for piercers.  The responsibility rest with the studio to hire adequately trained and knowledgeable staff.

All of permanent staff are members of The Association of Professional Piercers, and this can be verified at www.safepiercing.org

Our autoclave(s) are spore tested weekly by Mesa Labs.  Those results are available upon request, so feel free to ask.

  1. Rinse your piercing with clean, warm water to soak and remove dried matter. If the dried matter does not rinse off easily, you may use a wet q-tip to gently wipe away any matter left on the piercing. Take care to not pull on, or move the jewelry excessively. Do not pick or rotate your jewelry.
  2. Two times a day spray sterile saline onto a sterile piece of gauze. Hold gauze on the piercing being careful not to move the jewelry.  Then rinse the piercing making sure to get all fibers that may have been left behind by the gauze.  You will want to dry the piercing site and jewelry.  This can be done by setting your hair drier to “cool” and drying the area.
  3. Please be sure to use sterile saline NOT contact solution. Do not apply any other products on your piercing; this includes alcohol, peroxide, antibacterial ointments and soaps, bactine, or betadine.
  4. Do not submerge the piercing under water for at least one month, this includes any bodies of water and bathtubs full of water. No tanning for at least one month, do not apply lotions or oils on your piercing. When showering, take care to not catch your jewelry on any washcloths or towels.
  5. DO NOT TOUCH YOUR PIERCING. There is no need to rotate jewelry at any time. Take care to not catch or bump your piercing in your day to day activities.
  6. If your piercing is near your hair, try to keep any hair off of the piercing and hair products away from the area.  The best way to do this is to rinse your piercing really well as the last thing you do in the shower.
  7. If you wear makeup, do not apply it on or near your new piercing. Even once it is healed, makeup can get built up inside your piercing and cause irritation, and will dull any gems you may be wearing.
  8. Pressure is a piercings worst enemy.  Avoid sleeping on your new piercing, as doing so will create excessive irritation and prolonged healing. Other causes of pressure include ear buds, stethoscopes, particular articles of clothing, etc.
  9. For piercings above the neck: Your piercing may take anywhere from six to twelve weeks (any cartilage piercing will take 9-24 weeks) to completely heal.  If you have been pierced with larger jewelry to accommodate swelling, you may be able to change the jewelry as early as two weeks, depending on the piercing and how well the piercing is healed.  Please come see us at this time so we may install properly sized jewelry using techniques that will keep your piercing happy and healthy.
For piercings below the neck: Your piercing may take anywhere from 9-24 weeks to completely heal.  If you have been pierced with larger jewelry to accommodate swelling, you may be able to change the jewelry as early as two weeks, depending on the piercing and how well the piercing is healed.
For Surface Anchors: After you have had the anchor for 4 weeks we suggest using a piece of floss (unflavored and wax-free) to run under the top to ensure that secretions are not building up under the top. This only needs done once a week, and ONLY after 4 weeks of having the anchor. Your piercing may take anywhere from 24-32 weeks to heal, but please keep in mind that you will still need to care for your anchors after this initial healing process. You may come in to change tops after 8 weeks.

*Please note* You may experience the following with your new piercing: a small amount of bleeding and/or bruising, soreness, redness, swelling, a small amount of discharge that is anywhere from a clear to a yellowish white, and the “crust” or dried matter this discharge may leave behind.

  1. Your piercing is going to begin to swell as soon as you get pierced. There are many ways to reduce swelling including.  If you decide to use any over the counter anti-inflammatory, please consult your doctor first!
  2. For the first few days, avoid eating foods that are hot in both temperature and spiciness; colder, softer foods will feel more soothing to your piercing, and will be easier for you to eat. This being said, listen to your body!  If it hurts stop eating it.
  3. Do not smoke for two weeks.  The suction has a chance of tearing your piercing, and the contents you smoke will delay the healing process considerably.  This includes vaporizers, and e-cigarettes.
  4. Do not drink alcohol for 2 weeks.  Alcohol will irritate the fresh tissue around your piercing, possibly causing a delay in healing.
  5. No oral contact of any kind for 6 weeks. Your new piercing is an open wound until it has healed. This could increase the risks of getting sick, or become infected with communicable diseases through oral contact with anyone else. Oral contact includes kissing, oral sex, sharing anything that has been in contact with someone’s mouth, including public water fountains.
  6. 2 times a day use an alcohol-free oral rinse on the piercing.  Rinse according to manufacturers instructions.  Rinse with clean bottled water after eating or drinking for the first two weeks.
  7. Intra-oral piercings take anywhere from 9-12 weeks to heal. If you have been pierced with larger jewelry to accommodate swelling, you may be able to change the jewelry as early as two weeks, depending on the piercing and how well the piercing is healing.  Please come see us at this time so we may install properly sized jewelry with causing as little trauma to the healing tissue as possible.

We require clients to purchase new jewelry from us for their initial piercing.

There would be no way for us to verify the chemical composition of your jewelry, plus there is no way for us to be 100% sure that the jewelry was not previously worn by someone else.

First, you will hear stretching referred to as gauging quite often, and while that terminology may be incorrect we do understand that it is very common place.  For the purposes of this FAQ we will be referring to the process as stretching.

Stretching is a process that is well suited for some piercings and not as well suited for others.  For instance, maybe an earlobe is a better candidate for stretching then say an eyebrow.

To speak simply, stretching is a process where you install larger and larger jewelry into a piercing in order to expand the opening.  Stretching is not a race.  Please for the health of your piercings keep this in mind.  While it may be tempting to stretch quickly to fit the jewelry of your dreams, keeping a slow pace will make for a happier and healthier piercing in the end.

You can stretch with a variety of materials, and there are also some to stay away from.  We suggest only using non-porous materials such as, glass, implant grade steel, implant grade titanium, and some types of stone.  Materials that we would definitely stay away from are, woods, plastics, silicone, and anything that has a coating.

Clients 18 years old or older

You are required to bring a valid state or federally issued photo identification.

Clients between the ages of 17 and 7 years old

You are required to bring a valid state or federally issued photo identification.  If you do not already have one, please check with the BMV on what you will need to take to them to have one issued.  Make sure to bring us that receipt and we will take the cost of the ID off the cost of the piercing, essentially we will buy your ID for you! In addition, we will need your birth certificate or guardianship paperwork for us to validate that the individual bringing you in has the legal right to give consent for your piercing.

You will also need you legal guardian, and they will need a valid state or federally issued ID. Your legal guardian must be listed on your birth certificate or bring additional paperwork stating that they are your guardian.

Clients under the age of 7 years old

We require that all guardians bring your child’s birth certificate or guardianship paperwork to prove that you have the legal right to give consent.  The guardian will also need to have a valid state or federally issued ID.

Please understand that we do not make exceptions to these rules.  Your child’s health and safety are our primary concern, and with the variety of family dynamics in today’s society we want to be sure that the person that is signing for our underage clients has the legal right to do so.

We only use the best quality jewelry available on the market.  We have and always will adhere to the guidelines set forth by The Association of Professional Piercers.  This means that in all initial piercings we use implant grade materials, niobium, glass, and 14k or higher gold.  All of the jewelry is hand polished to a mirror finish, and internally threaded.  All of our threaded and threadless options are guaranteed for life to be free of manufacturing defects.

We do carry some other materials for healed piercings, and will discuss care and handling instructions with you at the time of purchase.

We will generally start by talking to you about what piercing you want, and what jewelry options you have.  Some piercings do require a bit more of a consultation to ensure that the anatomy you want pierced is suitable for a successful long-term piercing.

After we have figure that out, and you have selected your jewelry we will sterilize everything needed, and have you initial an integrator.  The integrator serves as proof that the autoclave reached the appropriate time and temperature to effective sterilize your items.  This will be shown to you prior to the piercing.

After you have finished up paperwork you will be taken to a piercing room where you will be cleaned, marked, and prepped.   All of our piercers take care to give you notice before the actual piercing occurs so it will not be a surprise.  Then you get to check out your new piercing!
